Here’s one for the early birds! I know where all in different timezones scattered across the globe, but for me it is 8.00 am right now. I can’t help it, but I am an early bird. I am the one who is always up way too early, way to cheerful, preparing breakfast for everyone else. While people are still unwilling to open their eyes, let alone speak, I am already planning afternoon activities (for today: making Pfannkuchen!). That’s how I’ve always been. It was a fun combination when I still lived with my cousin, who was the exact opposite of me. Every morning (especially the weekends), was like two opposing elements facing each other. Epic battles of morning smiles vs morning grumpiness. I still enjoy thinking back to those days.

What are you? Early bird or not?

Just had to share this editorial with you, anyway. I love the simplicity of it all. I am sure it was all but simple to get the shots to look the way they do, but that intrigues me so much. The way they’re sitting, proud, strong women united like sisters. As if they’re about to conquer the world with their love. They’re soft without being girly and still have that toughness gleaming in their eyes. I can’t really put it into words really, but I love it all! I don’t think you’ll be suprised if I mention the photographer’s name, will you?

“If we assume man has been corrupted by an artificial civilization, what is the natural state? The state of nature from which he has been removed? Imagine wandering up and down the forest without industry, without speech and without a home.”

- Jean Jaques Rousseau (Marie Antoinette, 2006, Sofia Coppola)

Who are we cheating? They’re not always flattering, they come in crazy colours and patterns, we wear them as pants even if we know exactly that that’s not what they were made for. In winter we would be lost without them, all our shorts and minis locked away in the far corner of our closets. But thanks to that clever invention we stride around town pretending to be immune to any feeling of cold. We rip and tear them, DIY them or treasure them so they won’t ladder, ignoring warnings on colds and bladder infection. But don’t get me started on whether or not it all makes any sense, because it doesn’t. But then again, not many things in this world do.

What defines who I am? I am what people see, my face, my body, my skin, my hair, my clothes or style. All that = Me. You look at me and judge, I see you and judge. With merely an exchange of glances, we both take a mental picture of each other. But we are made of more than what we can see. We are a collection of experiences we have made. Or maybe even more, because each experience influences the next experience to come. How we experience something now is certainly going to influence things we’ll experience in the future and will certainly have an effect on the persons we will be. A butterfly effect. We could be in the same place doing exactly the same thing and still have totally opposing opinions about what’s happening.

We tend to judge not only ourselves, but also others, by what they have/own/buy. She bought this and that, she must be so happy. Or: She can’t have this, she must be hiding the fact that that she is sad about it. It takes time and extra effort to remember that we’re not only made of what’s showing on the outside and look behind the curtain to see what’s really happening. Some people might even argue and say that the outside is the only thing that counts. Others might be afraid to meet their own demons right there. Don’t wake a sleeping dragon. It’s best expressed with this quote:

“Capitalism has brought us material well-being, but spiritual bankruptcy.” – Jeffrey Eugenides (The Virgin Suicides)

As much as we love the outside, spending time and money, getting lost in it, dedicating our whole life to it, we shouldn’t forget what lies beneath it.

“Autumn in poetry has often been associated with melancholy. The possibilities of summer are gone, and the chill of winter is on the horizon. Skies turn grey, and people turn inward, both physically and mentally. Rainer Maria Rilke, a German poet, has expressed such sentiments in one of his most famous poems, Herbsttag (Autumn Day), which reads:

Who now has no house, will not build one (anymore).
Who now is alone, will remain so for long,
will wake, and read, and write long letters
and back and forth on the boulevards
will restlessly wander, while the leaves blow.”

(Wikipedia)

I always thought I was a summer person and it still is my favourite season of the year, but this year I am kind of fond of autumn as well. Sure, you step out your door and almost slip, because all the colourful leaves that had dropped to the ground have turned into one slippery mass. You fight your way through the cold with the wind biting at your face and reach your destination drenched, because it started raining all of the sudden and you didn’t have an umbrella. So how can we make it better? There are some ways:  my guide to Autumn!

Fashion:

Autumn is one of the only seasons we can wear scarves (or snoods) like in the pictures below without going against any common sense. It’s cold and nobody wants wind in their ears or around the necks. Hooray for large scarves! Also: large jumpers and cardigans are very welcome!

Colour palettes of autumn are very different from the ones of summer. Theoretically it doesn’t matter what colours you were in what season of course. It’s up to you to decide what you throw on, but I tend to be drawn towards more natural colours, as if to blend in with the landscape that is changing from summery bright colours to earth colours.

List of Special Things To Do:

Nonetheless there are some things you can only do in autumn, so if it’s autumn where you are right now, be sure not to miss out! Let Some kites fly, enjoy the last warm rays of sun, explore the woods that are colourful and golden or look out for birds on their way to a warmer climate.

And what if you lost the fight against the elements? Time to retreat and get cosy at home! It’s one of the best places to be in autumn (that or cosy cafés, bars and libraries). The combination of books and tea is made for autumn. And in my case OD-ing myself with Belle & Sebastian. And for those of you who happen to have a chimney, throw it on!

Hope this was of any use for any of you out there. Embrace Autumn!
